Now Where Did I Put That?
Organize Now to Save Time and Worry Later
By Laura Chiesman
Have you ever been sure that you put an important document, bill, or letter somewhere “safe,” but you just can’t remember exactly which safe place that was? You are not alone! According to an article on PR Newswire, the average American spends 2.5 days each year looking for lost items collectively costing U.S. households $2.7 billion annually in replacement costs.
The Team at FirstWave Financial™ is always on the lookout for ways to make our clients’ lives easier, and we recently came across a simple form that, with a little investment of time now, could reduce time spent searching through files and desk drawers later.
Use the form below as a great tool to itemize where you store your important records, note usernames and passwords, and identify your primary advisors and contacts. I like this resource because it’s not so much telling you what documents you need, although there is a list, but rather where your documents are kept. It’s great to have a roadmap and to not have to depend on your memory, or the memory of others, during times of stress.
This tool, the Personal Document Locator, will assist your loved ones in the event of your death or disability. Make sure to provide a copy to a trusted family member, your executor, and/or your attorney.
Previously, I wrote a blog that addresses communicating with parents or other older relatives about important issues and plans for their future. Finding an opening for such conversations can be a challenge. This document locator can provide a great starting point to begin helping others in your life get organized and share important information.
